The generous donation of a Dartmouth alumnus to the Department of French and Italian has made possible the John A. Rassias Fund for Undergraduate Projects in French and Italian. The endowed research grant provides funding to enable majors in the Department of French and Italian to conduct research outside the United States for a senior thesis (French 89, Italian 89) or for an advanced independent project (French 78 or 87, Italian 88). Under the guidance of the project advisor, the thesis or project must be written in French or Italian.
The deadline for applications is Wednesday, October 19, 2016. To apply applicants must submit:
- a proposal (500 words) for French 78, 87 or 89, or Italian 88 or 89, which provides a detailed rationale for why this research is necessary to the project;
- one letter of recommendation from the advisor of the project;
- a list of all courses taken in French and Italian, as well as any courses directly relevant to the project, with the grades received.
In addition, the applicant must include a description of the research trip with a budget and timetable for completing the research, and a list of any other sources of funding for this project. Upon their return, students must provide a summary of their research in written form to the department. This award will be granted biannually, in October and May. Please submit your application by 4 pm on Wednesday, October 19, 2016 for funding for December interim or winter research; submit by 4 pm on Thursday, April 20, 2017 for funding for summer or fall research.
Students are invited to submit proposals for the endowment to Andrea Tarnowski, chair of French and Italian.
