Language Study Abroad (LSA) in Lyon

Offered winter term.

Prerequisite: French 2 with a grade of B or better.  Note: French 6 may count toward the minor.

The LSA program offers wide-ranging exposure to French life. Lyon, as France's "second city," has all the charm and vivacity of Paris. It boasts striking Renaissance architecture, France's most renowned cuisine, and easy access to both Alpine skiing and sunny southern regions.

Students take three Dartmouth-accredited courses taught exclusively in French:

  • French 3, Intermediate French, emphasizes the acquisition and refinement of language skills. Taught by French university faculty.
  • French 5, Aspects of Contemporary Culture, surveys recent French political and social history. Taught by French university faculty.
  • French 6, Readings in French Literature, deals with major figures, themes, or genres of French literature. Taught by Dartmouth faculty. (May count toward the minor.)

Advanced Language Study Abroad (LSA+) in Lyon

Prerequisite: French 3 with a grade of B or better. NOTE: Two of the courses in the LSA+ and the FSP count toward the major or minor.

The French LSA+ program takes place in Toulouse. Students may take advantage of the rich cultural, political, and historical offerings of this exciting city of 600,000 inhabitants, located in the Midi-Pyrénées region of the South of France. It is well known for its remarkable monuments and its world-famous companies (Concorde, Airbus, Spot, Aerospatiale, etc.) Culture is a keyword in "la ville rose", as it is known because of its red-brick buildings, making it a vibrant city enlivened by dance, theater, and concerts by the "orchestre du capitole".

Students take three Dartmouth-accredited courses taught exclusively in French:

  • French 8, A Cultural Approach to Advanced Writing and Speaking, emphasizes the acquisition and refinement of language skills. Taught by French university faculty.
  • French 10, Introduction to French Literature. Taught by French university faculty.
  • French 12, Advanced Writing and Speaking in French, taught by the Dartmouth faculty member in residence, allows students to use their growing mastery of the French language in readings and discussions of masterworks in the original language.
