Elephants flicker on the edges of our consciousness, massive yet elusive. Starting with Romain Gary's 1956 novel Les Racines du ciel, this talk will consider some notable elephants in 20th century and contemporary literary and cultural representations--and the story they may tell about the relationship between modernity and the earth.  Thangam Ravindranathan is Associate Professor in the Department of French Studies at Brown University.  Professor Ravindranathan will be speaking about her current work, which focuses on the animal in contemporary literary and critical thought.
