On June 6th, 2014 faculty members, graduating majors and minors and their parents gathered together in the gallery of the Rauner Library for the annual French and Italian Department Honor Prize Ceremony. Recipients were honored for their academic achievement with prizes made possible by the generosity of Dartmouth's alumni. Congratulations to our 2014 majors and minors in French and Italian!
Prizes and Recipients
THE CLOISE APPLETON CRANE PRIZE IN FRENCH AND ITALIAN was established in 1970 by Mrs. Mae Eloise Crane in memory of her son. Cloise Crane, class of 1935, died in 1969. Born in Strafford, Vermont, he came to Dartmouth from Washington, D.C. He became a language specialist and taught and served as a linguist for the government. He later became a translator for Demrich Associates where he worked in no less than eight languages. Sarah Peck
THE FRENCH CONSULATE PRIZE was created in 1982 at the request of Bernard Genton, Attaché Culturel at the French Consulate in Boston. After visiting campus and meeting several of our majors, he wished to create a book prize to be awarded to an outstanding scholar in the French program at Dartmouth. Daniel Driscoll
THE GEORGE E. DILLER MEMORIAL PRIZE was created in memory of a distinguished teacher of French at Dartmouth, whose love of French life and culture was transmitted to generations of Dartmouth students. George Diller came to Dartmouth in 1936 as an instructor and moved through the ranks to full professor, staying until his retirement in 1966. In 1966-67 he coordinated the French Foreign Study and Language Study Programs in France. We wish to recognize with this prize an outstanding student planning to pursue further studies in French civilization. Benjamin Jenkins
THE FRANÇOIS DENOEU MEMORIAL PRIZE is given each year to a senior who has manifested outstanding accomplishment as an apprentice teacher and in courses on French Civilization. Angela Kim
THE THOMAS J. GAUDET, JR. MEMORIAL PRIZE was established in 1983 by the family of Thomas J. Gaudet, Jr., Class of '81, and is awarded annually to the graduating French Major who has submitted the most outstanding critical or creative writing in French. Jenny Che
THE COLETTE L. GAUDIN PRIZE IN FRENCH honors an outstanding student who has demonstrated a deep understanding of French philosophical traditions and contemporary issues. Shauna Teevens
THE RAMON GUTHRIE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD IN FRENCH is given each year to a graduating senior who has shown outstanding growth in French language and literature, and who has contributed significantly to the academic and extracurricular purposes of the French and Italian Department. Kathleen Chung
THE LAWRENCE AND SHEILA HARVEY PRIZE IN FRENCH AND ITALIAN was established in 1985 to be awarded annually to a student who has done outstanding work in French and/or Italian language, literature, and civilization, and who has promoted the cultural values of France and Italy. Evan Sterneck
THE ARIANNA PAGANI ’93 MEMORIAL PRIZE IN FRENCH AND ITALIAN. Ariana Pagani ’93 was an Honors Romance Language major at Dartmouth College who worked in Italian and French. Ariana wrote her honors thesis on “Simone de Beauvoir: La politique de la passion et la passion de la politique.” She was also a gifted Apprentice Teacher. This prize is given in memory of her lively spirit and her love of languages. Gabriela Maica
THE PAUL D. AND MARILYN M. PAGANUCCI PRIZE IN ITALIAN is awarded to the student, who in the opinion of the Department, has made the greatest contribution to the study and furtherance of Italian culture during the previous academic year. This prize was created to recognize the singular dedication of Paul Paganucci '53, Tuck '54 and Marilyn Paganucci to the quality of education in Italian Studies at Dartmouth College. Kara Curosh
THE PRAY MODERN LANGUAGE PRIZE IN FRENCH AND ITALIAN, established in 1847, is given to the student with the highest grade point average in French and Italian. Jenny Che and Adam Siedlecki
THE BRUNO TOLLON PRIZE IN FRENCH STUDIES. This award was created to honor Bruno Tollon who was the faculty coordinator and art history professor for Dartmouth’s off-campus program in Toulouse from its inception in 1973 until his retirement in 2010. A highly accomplished scholar of Renaissance art, Professor Tollon introduced thousands of Dartmouth students to France’s architectural and artistic wonders. This award honors a graduating senior French major or minor who has exhibited exceptional talent in and passion for interdisciplinary studies in French. Jenny Che
