SUMMER '21 COURSE: FRENCH 80 CULTURE ET CUISINE: LES ARTS DE LA GASTRONOMIE

For over 300 years the world has associated France with the gastronomic arts.  UNESCO has honored "the gastronomic meal of the French" by officially designating it as part of the "intangible cultural heritage of humanity."  In this interdisciplinary course, we will explore the culture of French gastronomy from its origins to the present.  What forms does this cultural patrimony take in France?  How has French gastronomy changed over time?  What can an understanding of French gastronomy tell us about French ways of thinking, les mentalités françaises?  We will pay particular attention to the way that words create, reflect, and transmit this patrimoine.

This course will be held during K hour.

It is possible to substitute this particular Fr. 80 for the Fr. 22/23 requirement for the major.  Please contact Prof. Beasley for information at Faith.Beasley@Dartmouth.edu
