LSA+ students explore the many faces of Rome with Amir Issaa

Students on the Rome LSA+ enjoy Rome and all that it has to offer. They are also getting to know the city beyond stereotypes. We asked Peter Governali, the Director Assistant, to share a few words about the Rome LSA+ students' journey of discovery.

Here is what he told us:

"Students of the LSA+ are working with the Roman artist, author, and rapper, Amir Issaa. Each week, they meet with Amir in a different quarter of Rome to see the city's many faces beyond the city center and the static cultural "authenticity" often sought by tourists.

Through these visits and readings from Issa's book, Vivo Per Questo, the students are engaging with themes of gentrification, resistance, and above all, identity. After each encounter, Amir helps students write a few rhymes to express their reflections on these themes. They learn to question their assumptions about Rome, what it means to be Italian, and how these realities are constructed." (Peter Governali)

We wish our students in Rome to continue questioning ideas and reflecting on cultural values as they engage in their transformational study abroad experience.
