This summer: Lights, Camera, France: A Journey Through French Cinema with Professor Hollister @ 10a

Lights dim. The projector hums. France comes alive on screen.

From the shadowy streets of a Godard thriller to the sun-drenched landscapes of a Renoir masterpiece, French cinema has long been one of the world's most daring and influential art forms. This summer, dive deep into the films, filmmakers, and movements that revolutionized the way we watch — and think about — movies.

In French Film, you'll go beyond simply watching great cinema. You'll learn to read it — decoding the visual language, cultural context, and artistic choices that make French film a window into the French soul. Whether we're tracing the arc of a singular director's vision, mapping a watershed movement like the French New Wave, or following a powerful theme across decades of filmmaking, every screening is a conversation between past and present, art and society.

No two summers are alike: the focus shifts each term, making this a course worth revisiting even if you've been here before.

Conducted in English. Prerequisite: FREN 006, a course from the FREN 10 series, or instructor permission. Fulfills World Cultures: Western Cultures and ART distributive requirements.

Come for the films. Leave with a new way of seeing the world.

Add/drop reopens June 25-July 1, 2026.
