Endowed Research Grant

This grant provides funding to enable French and Italian majors in the Department of French and Italian to conduct research for a senior thesis (French 89, Italian 89) or for an advanced independent project (French 78 or 87, Italian 88) abroad.  After consultation with the project advisor, the thesis or project must be written in French or Italian, and the research must be conducted anywhere outside the United States.

How to Apply

To apply applicants must submit:

  • a proposal (500 words) for French 78, 87 or 89, or Italian 88 or 89 and provide a detailed rationale explaining why this research is necessary for the project;
  • one letter of recommendation from the advisor of the project; and
  • a list of all courses taken in French and Italian, as well as any courses directly relevant to the project, with the grade received.

In addition, the applicant must include a description of the research trip with a budget and time table for completing the research, and a list of alternative sources of funding applied for in addition to this grant. Upon returning, students must provide a summary of their research in written form to the department. This award will be bestowed biannually, in October and May. Please submit your application by 4 pm on October 20 for funding for December research; submit by 4 pm on April 20 for funding for summer research.

Students are invited to submit proposals for the endowment to Andrea Tarnowski, chair of French and Italian.
