Study Abroad

Apply to the FSP Paris Program by February 1st each year

Current Students in Their Own Words

"I decided to go on the Paris program because Dartmouth offers wonderful opportunities, and studying with Dartmouth is temporary, therefore the mental math led me to the conclusion that I absolutely must apply for the language study abroad program! This program opened my eyes to the exceptional study abroad opportunities provided by Dartmouth. I realized how well connected Dartmouth is on an international scale - a fabulous avenue to meet other students and staff with shared academic values. This program was complete immersion, improving my comprehension and language speaking skills. Furthermore, the program is quite intimate, allowing students to form strong, unique friendships with one another. That was a very special Parisian souvenir. Just about every excursion was a joy - Reims, Marseille, the theater, walking tours. I really enjoyed seeing Carmen at the Opera. It was an experience of a lifetime.?

About the FSP in Paris

The FSP in Paris provides an advanced program of study designed to expand the curriculum of Dartmouth College into new areas of significant intellectual discovery and cultural understanding through supervised study and residence.  Students who complete the FSP will have all three of their courses count toward the major or minor in French.

Students live with local families and take three Dartmouth courses taught exclusively in French:

  • French 29: French Civilization. Paris is the students' classroom in this course, which includes a weekly two-hour walking tour of sites of architectural, historical and artistic interest. From Roman amphitheaters to medieval stained glass windows and from the courtyard of the Sorbonne university to the esplanade of the Louvre museum, the student will acquire the contextual knowledge to understand the City of Light.
  • French 30: French Literature. Students read representative works of literature on a theme established by the Dartmouth faculty director, drawing on a variety of genres that may include contemporary novels, poetry, essays, parody, political manifestos or classical theater. Excursions to see theater and film and to visit cultural sites in connection with the course.
  • French 31: French Language. Designed to advance the students' skills in both spoken and written French. Review and refine grammar, expand vocabulary and participate in discussions on life in French society today: the educational system, immigration, health care, climate initiatives, and cultural differences between France and the US.

In addition to their coursework, students explore the city and the region through short excursions to museums, architectural sites and participation in cultural events.

Prerequisites for the Paris FSP

-- Complete French 5 (formerly French 8) with a grade of B or better

-- Complete French 6 (formerly French 10) with a grade of B or better

We encourage students to take a French course (French 6 or higher) as close to their FSP term as scheduling allows, to keep their language skills honed.

Please note:

An alternative way to fulfill the prerequisites for the FSP is to participate in the L.S.A.+ program in Toulouse before moving on to the FSP in Paris
