Thesis Timeline for French

Junior Year

  • Identify a topic of interest
  • Identify and contact potential faculty advisor
  • Write a one-page proposal in consultation with faculty advisor by June 1 to include:
    •  topic
    • faculty advisor
    • brief bibliography of summer research readings

Spring Term

  • If funds are needed for research that will be conducted abroad during the summer, submit application along with proposal (before April 1)

Summer (good theses are always started in the summer term)

  • Research, read, write in consultation with faculty advisor
  • Prepare an annotated bibliography of primary or secondary sources determined with the advisor
     

Senior Year

Fall Term

  • Submit annotated bibliography within the first two weeks of the term
  • Enroll in French 87 
    • Research, read, write in consultation with faculty advisor
    • If funds are needed for research that will be conducted abroad during the December, submit application along with proposal (before November 1)
    • By the end of French 87 submit a substantial piece of writing that will be part of your thesis (20+ pages)

Winter Term

  • Enroll in French 78
  • Research, read and write in consultation with faculty advisor
  • French 78 may be used to continue research on your honors thesis.

Spring Term

  • Enroll in French 89
  • Finish writing, format thesis using MLA guidelines and submit thesis to your advisor by May 1
  • Public oral presentation by mid-May
  • Digital copy of thesis due in department by mid-May
