Ramon Guthrie Achievement Award In French

The Ramon Guthrie Achievement Award In French is given each year to a graduating senior who has shown outstanding growth in French language and literature, and who has contributed significantly to the academic and extracurricular purposes of the French and Italian Department.

Ramon Guthrie

Ramon Guthrie taught in the Romance Languages Department from 1930 until his retirement in 1964.  Professor Guthrie, a poet of international stature and a teacher of 19th and 20th century French literature, was revered by generations of students who were fortunate enough to have him as a teacher.  His love of France, its culture, language and literature inspired many students to make a commitment to French language and literature and to attain the kind of achievement in this domain which the Department wishes to honor with this award.
